Peru is a South American country, made popular by its award-winning gastronomy, and its history as the center of an ancient Incan city high in the Andes mountains. You may have heard of Macchu Picchu as one of the wonders of the world. Or perhaps about its richly diverse flora and fauna in the Amazon Rainforest. Or maybe its deliciously unique ceviche
This is a delicious and super easy recipe that is fun for kids to help prepare!
I am positive your family will love these golden fried wonton wraps filled with cheese and deli meat with a side of mashed avocados to dip them in.
Ideas for Tequeño fillings are: mozzarella cheese, cheddar cheese, queso fresco, hot dog strips, or rolled deli meat.
Little fingers can help roll the chosen filling into the wonton wrappers and seal the edges we a light touch of water from a small bowl. They can also help mash the avocados. Parents do the frying. The whole family can enjoy the new favorite movie or game night snack!
- 12 square wonton wraps (you can find these in the refrigerator section at Target)
- 8 ounces cheese, cut into 12 sticks OR deli meat
- 2 cups oil for frying
- 3 large avocados, pitted and peeled
- 6 tbsp lime juice
- 3/4 cup mayonnaise
- Salt and pepper to taste
- On a flat surface, place a piece of cheese on a wonton wrapper, approximately 1/4 inch from the top.
- Fold in each side of the wrapper, then roll up.
- Use a little water to seal the edges
- Repeat with remaining filling and wrappers
- Heat oil in a deep skillet.
- Fry tequeños until golden brown, about 5 minutes.
- Place on paper towel to absorb excess oil.
- Let cool 10-15 minutes. It may be hard to wait, but they will be hot, especially for little diners!
Mash the avocados. Add lime and mayonnaise. Mix well and season with salt and pepper to taste.
Stack up like a Jenga tower for extra visual appeal, serve with the avocado dip, and if you are feeling fancy, garnish with chopped cilantro, tomatoes, or chives.
