A Toddler Devotion on Jesus’ First Miracle

Jesus and his followers went to a wedding where they ran out of wine. This is where Jesus performed his first miracle, turning water into wine, and it was the best wine at the party (John 2:1-11). To play through this story, we did a simple experiment with water, markers, and a paper towel.

What you need:

  • Paper Towel
  • Red sharpie marker
  • Black Sharpie
  • Water

What you do:

  1. Fold paper towel in half.
  2. On front flap of paper towel, draw a wine glass with the black sharpie
  3. On back flap, color with the red sharpie.
  4. Drop paper towel into a bowl of water and see the water turn to wine. See demo below.

The Water to Wine

The physical miracle was the water turning into wine. However I love what David Guzik comments that this miracle was the symbolism of something so much more. Salvation would no longer be found in the law. It would no longer be found in trying to live up to this golden standard, and when we failed sacrificing an animal in our place. Instead, God’s great plan was coming to completion. The Christ had come to atone for the world, and salvation would be found in him. Christ is the best wine. In his grace alone we find our hope.

  1. Hi! This is so encouraging!! I am a single mom and have a three year old. I have been praying for ways to better teach her about Gods word & the way HE created us to love&live. After I put her to bed tonight I figured I would check out Pinterest and your post popped in my feed. God is still working. Keep up the good work mama😊
