Review of ‘Being Bilingual is Fun!’

This year I have the great privilege of participating in Multicultural Children’s Book Day, and had the great pleasure of reviewing “Being Bilingual is Fun!” by Claudia Schwalm. I was gifted this book by Claudia to review in celebration of the day, and instantly fell in love. Featuring real photographs, relatable stories, and an important message, this nonfiction book captures the attention of young learners.

Real Photos

I absolutely love the photography used in this book. It features real life places children may go and see other languages. There are also photos of actual bilingual children and their families. It is so important for children to engage with books that contain photographs, not just illustrations, because it helps them engage with the world around them, and apply their learning. However, it’s sometimes hard to find childrens books with photographs. This makes the photography in “Being Bilingual is Fun!” even more brilliant.

Relateable Stories

The book also features stories of children who are bilingual. It shows what their lives are like and how they became bilingual. I find this so wonderful for children growing up bilingual, because it represents them. It also connects children who are monolingual to bilingual peers, making this a wonderful resource for children that have had questions after hearing other languages while out-and-about.

An Important Message

Finally, I think this book has an important message for children that “being bilingual is fun.” Being bilingual opens up so many doors of opportunity to see the world in a broader way. This books helps show children the joy in being bilingual.

Multicultural Children’s Book Day

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2019 (1/25/19) is in its 6th year and was founded by Valarie Budayr from Jump Into A Book and Mia Wenjen from PragmaticMom. Our mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves while also working diligently to get more of these types of books into the hands of young readers, parents and educators.
