Review of: Joseph and the Very Strange Dreams

We are huge fans of ‘The Very Best Bible Stories‘ series by Tim Thornborough. The illustrations by Jennifer Davison are always gorgeous. And I love the way the stories are simplified for littles without loosing the heart of their message.

When I saw they were adding ‘Joseph and the Very Strange Dreams’ to the collection, I jumped at the opportunity to review it.

This fresh retelling of an ancient story introduces littles to the way God showed-up in the story of Joseph. Through all the ups and downs, God was with Joseph, and he’s with us too.

Joseph and the Very Strange Dreams

This retelling of Joseph uses the medium of opposites to explore the story. Joseph was little, his brothers were big. His brothers threw him down into a well, and drew him up to send him to Egypt. He found himself both in prison and the palace. But God was with him in the good and the bad. Even when things ares sad, God has a plan to make them glad.

What I loved

Something unique about this book is that they never mention the ‘coat of many colors.’ Most stories about Joseph really emphasize this, leading this to be the only thing many littles know about Joseph. However, it’s really a small detail in the overarching narrative. Instead, they focus their attention on God’s providence and how God is sovereign and control over every situation. Even when life is taking a dark turn, we can trust that God will bring peace and justice in God’s time.

What My Kids Love

As always, they loved the illustrations. Jennifer Davison always does a fantastic job depicting Bible characters. My youngest (3.5) loves opposites like ‘BIG’ and ‘little’, so it was fun to read together and see him so engaged. They also loved seeing how God brought a happy ending to this story.
