Jesus said ‘ I am the Light of the World, whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’ -John 8:12
This month we are exploring this verse using our John 8:12 Snail Mail Kit. The whole kit uses play with light and darkness to meditate on Jesus as the Light of the World.
One of the play prompts is ‘Play with glowsticks,’ so we are revisiting one of our favorite activities: Glow Stick Sensory Bath.
I love this activity, because you can make it as simple or as complicated as you desire. This time we got a bit extra, but it is just as fun if you crack open a dollar tree pack of glowsticks and let your little play.
As we play, we make a point to ask ‘Do you remember who the light of the world is?’ The answer is, of course, Jesus. This simple prompting opens the door to contemplate Jesus as light of the world.
Come pray n’ play with us.

What you need
Disclaimer: this post contains affiliate links. I make a small commission on items purchased through these links, but I only recommend items I really love and think you will too.
- Glow sticks– as mentioned, this is really the only item you need. Just crack open a pack and through them in the bathtub. The rest of the items on this list are optional.
- Glow-in-the-dark stars– If you use these, I definitely recommend using with a black light. The glow sticks and other glow items created so much light that it was hard to see the stars, and I think would have been more effective with a black light bulb. However, if you use a black light, be sure your in a place where you can emotionally handle all the hidden bathroom germs the black light will uncover.
- Light-up balloon– i chose to go with a single light up balloon i could pick up for $1 at Walmart. However you could get a multiracial and make a garland over the shower curtain rod.
- Light-up bath toys- This time, I used a light-up pool light i got from 5 Below for $1 (similar to this one: light-up pool light) but in the past we’ve really enjoyed light up bath toys.
- Moon light- i got mine at Dollar Tree, but the one I linked to is very similar. This is not a waterproof item, so I instead placed it on a shelf in the bathroom, to add a little extra light, and a reminder of how we reflect the light of Jesus.

- Sleep Bubble Bath– Finally, we also used a sleepy time bubble bath. Our bathroom has natural light so we had to wait for the sun to set to do this activity. That meant we were creeping in on bedtime, and everyone needed to go to bed right after. I decided to enlist the help of some essential bubble bath. I don’t know how well it worked to get kids to bed after, but bubble bath is always a fun time.

What you do
Set your bathtub up the way you like, and let your littles explore.
As they play, plant the seed that Jesus is the Light of the World.
For toddlers, expound, Jesus’ love shines in the dark.
For older children, give them the opportunity to contemplate independently, or listen if they have lots of thoughts they want to share.
