Pray n’ Play: Pentecost

You’ve celebrated Easter, and Christmas, but have you ever celebrated Pentecost? Pentecost celebrates when the Holy Spirit fell upon the first disciples, and thus began the Church. The Church’s Birthday! The Spirit came with the sounds of rushing wind, and tongues of fire (Acts 2:1-3). And those present began to speak in other languages. This was God beginning to fulfill the promise that his rescue plan was not just for a few people, but for the whole world!

So let’s celebrate!

Below I have rounded up some of my favorite ways to celebrate Pentecost with littles.

Tongues of Fire Mobile

Everytime we’ve had babies in our home around Pentecost we make this mobile and it is a hit. It’s a fantastic fine-motor activity for my big kids, and sensory activity for babies, and a beautiful reminder for us all of the Holy Spirit.

Books About the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is kind of a weird subject to discuss with kids, filled with mystery and nuance. So I made a round up of books we’ve found helpful and think you will too.

Pentecost Candles

This year we made Pentecost candles and they turned out so cool!

We simply used modge podge to decorate white votive candles with the disciple paper dolls from We Who Thirst. We have lit these everytime we read a story about the early Church as a reminder that we are the new temple of the Holy Spirit.

Pentecost Birthday Cake

In her book Living the Seasons, Erica Campbell shares an idea I’m absolutely obsessed with. Pentecost is the birthday of the church, so why not have a birthday cake. She even has instructions for making tongues of fire birthday candles.

Pentecost Coloring Page from Illustrated Min

This coloring page is fantastic and can totally be used to make a crown as a reminder that tongues of fire fell on the apostles.
