Pray n’ Play: Christ’s Ascension

If you also grew up in a Evangelical church, you may have no idea that the church calendar actually has a whole day remembering Jesus’s Ascension into heaven. I had no idea until we started exploring the church year as a family.

Come Pray n’ Play the Ascension with us.

What is the Ascension?

The Ascension is when Jesus returned to heaven (Act 1: 1-9). It is when he was taken up to heaven in a cloud (much like Elijah, 2 Kings 2). And when he did, he promised to send us the Holy Spirit, which now dwells in us,, the church!

When is Ascension Day?

Ascension Day is always 40 days after Easter.

How to Celebrate?

Read the story of the Ascension in Acts 1:1-9 and then try out one of the ideas below:

  • Fly Kites: This is actually an Eastertide tradition in several Caribbean countries. Play through the Ascension and take some time to pray for the Global Church. (Tip: Cheap dollar store kites catch the best air, because they are light and flimsy).
  • Play With Helium Balloons: Give your child a helium balloon with a string. Have them pull the balloon to the floor and watch it float up to the ceiling (don’t do this outdoors).

How will you celebrate Ascension Day?
