Family Movie Night: St. Nicholas: A Story of Joyful Giving + St. Nick’s Snack Tray

Saint Nick’s Day (December 6th) has become a beautiful tradition in our family. It is a day the church remembers St. Nicholas (the man behind the legend of Santa Claus). He is an example of how we can love like Jesus, and celebrating his feast day has become a beautiful way of showing our littles what Santa Claus has to do with the birth of Jesus. St. Nick is not the purpose of Christmas, but he points back to the true meaning of Christmas: Jesus!

We love to celebrate St. Nick’s day with a family movie night. Veggietales has a fantastic retelling of St. Nicholas’s story. Veggietales: St Nicholas: A Story of Joyful Giving! (Available for free on the VeggieTales Official YouTube channel). Below you will find menu and activity ideas to make this a full blown movie night!

St. Nick’s Snack Tray

What movie night is complete without a snack tray? Below you’ll find what we did for our St. Nick Snack Tray.

What you need:

  • Popcorn of choice (puffcorn for younger toddlers).
  • Gold-wrapped chocolate coins: like the coins St. Nicholas placed in his neighbors’ shoes.
  • Candy canes: These represent the bishop’s crook, because St. Nicholas became a church bishop.
  • Clementines: Oranges are traditionally placed in shoes on St. Nick’s Day, and symbolize the gold coins. Also adds some Vitamin C to our snack tray during cold season.
  • Chocolate St. Nicholas: Because we’re talking about the legend.

What you do:

Arrange all items on a tray as desired. Enjoy!

*If you are having a movie night with a larger group (i.e. children’s church, homeschool co-op, etc.) These Christmas Movie Night Snack Trays and Christmas cups would be such a fun way to make individual trays for everyone!

Decorations and Fun

St. Nicholas VeggieTales Coloring Page: This St. Nicholas coloring page was a huge hit with my kids.

St. Nick Printable Banner: This banner would be the cutest decor for your movie night.

St. Nick Chocolate Coins: The Kennedy Adventures has the perfect way to make your chocolate coins extra festive with this St. Nick coin craft.

St. Nicholas Day Gift Set: This gift set from Shining Light Dolls would be the perfect addition to your St. Nick movie night. With sticker and chocolate coins. It is a lovely way to remind us of how St. Nick points us to Jesus.

-Make it a double feature!: Veggie Tales are pretty short, which is great for toddlers and preschoolers with short attention spans. However if you have older kids, you may want to make it a double feature for a real movie night! We like to pair this one with Merry Larry and the True Light of Christmas, but you could also pair it with any other favorite Santa-themed movie.
