November is Native American Heritage Month, so I wanted to take a moment to highlight some book treasures in our collection by Native American authors.

Birth of the Chosen One by Terry Wildman

This beautiful book by Terry Wildman offers a retelling of the Christmas story in a Native American context. The storytelling is beautiful and definitely worth a read.

The Harmony Tree by Randy Woodley

This book tells the story of Grandmother tree and her deep roots. She knows and trusts Creator so she is not shaken. Based on Psalm 1, and the true story of an old tree from Randy Woodley’s home, this book is a beautiful story for learning what it means to have deep roots in Christ.

Winter’s Gifts by Kaitlin B. Curtice

This delightful book follows Dani as she explores the gifts Creator gives us in the winter. I love the explanation for Dani’s name that Kaitlin offers in the beginning of the book:

This story is about a girl named Dani (Dah-nee). Dani is the Potawatomi word used to describe the affection toward a beloved or special daughter. So Dani represents not just the love we share with our human families but also our special status as the beloved children of Creator and of Earth, who was made by Creator to be our mother.

God’s Love Is Like by Ray Buckley

This is a collection of Jesus’s parables retold to children in various cultural settings. From the Prodigal son retold in Native American dance, to the parable of the mustard seed shown in a Latino home, this book is a beautiful collection to share the parables with your little.

Great Story from Sacred Book (audio book) by Terry Wildman

This audio resource shares Bible stories in the format of traditional oral storytelling. Listen to the stories anew with Terry Wildman’s storytelling.

An Aboriginal Carol by David Bouchard

Many people love ‘Huron Carol,’ a traditional Canadian Christmas carol. David Bouchard, Moses Beaver, and Susan Aglukark have collaborated to rework this carol from an  indigenous perspective so that the birth of Christ may resonate with all people.

The Give-Away by Ray Buckley

Ok, you all. I literally cried reading this one. This Christ- centered Christmas story talks about the need for a savior from creation’s perspective, and Creator’s choice to give of himself for the world. This is one you definitely want to add to your bookish advent calendar.

The Wing by Ray Buckley

This book is a beautiful illustration of Psalm 147:3, ‘He heals the broken hearted and binds up their wounds.’ Journey with injured bird as she experiences Creator’s touch and finds that true healing is more than just surface-deep.

Thanks for providing books about Christianity from not only a Western or white point of view.

Of course! The Bible isn’t a Western or white book. Doing my best to unlearn my own biases when it comes to the text, and listen to others on this journey. It’s really grown my faith, and I hope it helps others on this journey.
