Review of: Turtle Finds His Talent

We’ve all been there. Seeing how God has uniquely equipped someone else, we fall into the trap of asking ‘but what about me?’ And when those thoughts creep in it can be hard to see the goodness of God in our lives. Even our littles can feel this twinge of envy when they start to recognize the way God gifted their friends but have a harder time recognizing how God has gifted them.

Turtle Finds His Talent by Lucille Williams is a gift for littles struggling with comparison. This special book has been a lovely tool to help us navigate these emotions and guide our little in seeing her own special talents.

What I Love

In this book we journey with Tanner Turtle as he plays with his friends. He sees how fox is fast…and he is slow. He sees how bunny can jump really high…and, well, turtles can’t really jump at all. He discovers giraffe can reach way up high into the trees, but feels like he comes up short. Each night he discusses this with Mama Turtle who reaffirms, God has made you special. On the final day of play we discover something special about turtles. They have a shell they can tuck their bodies into (oh and there is a special slide feature in the book to demonstrate). All the animal friends are amazed at Tanner’s special skill, and he learns God has given him unique gifts too.

This sweet book is a wonderful reminder to littles that God made them perfect with their own gifts and talents. When we feel envious of another person’s gifts we can rest assured that our good God has not left us high and dry. But we are made perfectly with our own unique gifts and talents to share with the world.

What My Littles Love

My youngest (17 months) loves the slide festure on the last page. This board book is perfect for engaging his short attention span.

My middle little loves the animals. She is a little animal lover and it was so fun watching them run around and play throughout the story. She also felt a lot of empathy for little Tanner Turtle’s story. She noticed when he was sad at bedtime chatting with mama turtle. But then she also noticed the joy Tanner Turtle had when he discovered his own talent and all his friends celebrated with him.

This is a sweet book for helping littles think of all the ways God made them special. We all have gifts and talents, yet all of us are unique.
