The Best Mexican Restaurants in the Twin Cities

Cinco de Mayo is coming up on Sunday, and if you’re looking for a way to celebrate in a way that loves our neighbors well, I highly consider supporting a local Mexican-owned business. If you live in the Twin Cities, there are so many great options. Here are our favorites.

Bakeries

Dulceria Bakery-If you follow me on Instagram, you have probably seen me post about this bakery frequently. It is a favorite. Modern variations of traditional Mexican favorites: Arroz con leche filled Conchas, Torta de Cielo, and Horchalattes (Horchata Latte). Seriously the best!!!

Toddler Pick: Birthday Cake Concha

Marissa’s– Traditional Mexican pastries. Soft and sweet conchas, marranitos, and so many other pastries I don’t know the name of. On Dia de Los Reyes, the line for a Rosca is out the door and down the block! You don’t get that way without being the best.

Toddler Pick: Classic Concha

Hamburgers

Hamburguesas El Gordo– Hamburgers may not be your first thought when thinking of Mexican food, but maybe they should be. Mexican hamburgers are NOT like American hamburgers. They are loaded with deliciousness. Ham, bacon, avocado, and so many other savory toppings. You will feel “gordo” when you leave.

Toddler Pick: Gordo Jr.

Tacos

EL Super Taco– This is another fav you will see me post about a lot. Their tacos are simple, but oh so good! My favorite are their pastor, and barbacoa. Vale loves their tacos de lengua. You really can’t go wrong.

Toddler Pick: Tacos de Lengua

Taco Libre– Looking for a luchador-themed restaurant? This is it! With taco fillers like flor de calabaza and huitlacoche, you need to try this place. If you’re extra hungry, opt for a machete!

Toddler Pick: Kids Street Taco

La Hacienda– This was our go-to spot when Fabian and I were dating. But when we got married, our late-night taco runs slowed down, and so did our visita to La Hacienda. That is until they put one down the street from our house! Now this favorite date-night place has become our family favorite.

Toddler Pick: Tacos del Pastor

Tamales

La Loma-These are by far the BEST Tamales in the city. Elote, pollo, puerco, piña…you really can’t go wrong. Don’t mish their half-off Tuesdays! They may turn your Taco Tuesday into Tamal Tuesday.

Toddler Pick: Tamal de Elote

Ice Cream

La Michoacana– Mexican ice cream shop? Yes please. La Michoacana Purepecha has American favorites like vanilla and strawberry, but you’ll probably want to pass those up for a gansito or cajete.

Toddler Pick: Gansito or Bubble Gum

As Seen on TV

Andale Taqueria-If you watch Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, you will know all about Andale. The restaurant is delicious, and their grocery store is another excellent option for pan dulce. Vale likes to visit just to see the piñatas.

Toddler Pick: Taco de pollo

Taco Truck

Taqueria Victor Hugo-This is my favorite Taco Truck, and therefore the best! So excited that they are opening a brick-and-mortar shop as well!

Toddler Pick: Taco de cabeza

Traditional

Fiesta Cancun– If you really can’t pass on your bogo margheritas for Cinco de Mayo, want some one to throw a sombrero on you and sing on your birthday, and you need all the complimentary chips and salsa, this is your place. The mocajetes are the best!

Toddler pick: Rice and beans

El Burrito-Finally, El Burrito is a local treasure. Shop around the store, grab some pan dulce for later, and enjoy an elote on their deck.

Toddler pick: Elotes!
